Federal officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are proposing changes to crane and derrick rules for the first time since their creation.
The new rules are being put in place to prevent more than 20 workplace fatalities and multiple more injuries a year. The new rules include a requirement that states that crane operators must be trained in the equipment they are using.
This certification will take four years to obtain. General contractors must also be trained to make sure that the ground operations are safe to operate the cranes from. These new rules will effect 267,000 crane and construction companies.

A rigging contractor was acquitted of charges dealing with a crane collapse in a construction accident in Manhattan that killed seven workers. The case also revealed the inspection process from the city’s building inspection department may have some illegal aspects.
The State Supreme Court made the decision on the case without a jury. The contractor’s lawyers fought that the man was made a scapegoat for errors made by the city.
The prosecutors argued that the man used faulty slings to hold the crane while it was being raised. The most serious charge that the man faced was second-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors looked very surprised when the judge delivered the verdict.
