Early Monday morning, a three-story brownstone home in Brooklyn caught fire. The home is located on Putnam Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Fire officials and investigators say the fire that left several injured started at the top floor of the house. One of the home’s occupants had to shimmy down a rope to escape the fire and a second was rescued and carried out of the fire by firefighter Peter Demontreux.

Authorities reported that six people had to be treated for minor injures, three people were transported to a nearby hospital suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation, and four firefighters were injured in the fire.

Two New York legislators, State Senator Daniel Squadron and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, announced Sunday in front of a Lower East Side supermarket that they are creating a bill asking all farmers in New York to vaccinate their hens for salmonella. Their announcement comes after the nationwide egg recall that removed half a billion eggs from store shelves due to salmonella bacteria. There have been approximately 1,200 reported cases of salmonella-related food poisoning from the eggs since May.

Kavanagh stated, “The massive outbreaks of food-borne illness in recent months leave no doubt that our food safety system is failing us, threatening everyone’s well being and sometimes costing people’s lives”.

Squadron and Kavanagh argued that for the 5 billion eggs produced in the state of New York alone, vaccinations would cost less than a penny per dozen. Every year there is an average of 142,000 cases of salmonella food poisoning from eggs in the United States.

If you or someone you know has suffered from a toxic food product, contact the Queens product liability lawyers of Parker Waichman Alonso LLP at 1-888-244-2273 to learn more about your rights.

The state of New York and states across the country have chosen to participate in an 18-day nationwide campaign to prevent drunk driving. ”Over the Limit- Under Arrest” began on August 20th and will last until Labor Day, September 6th. The campaign will require anyone convicted of a misdemeanor or felony drunk driving charge, even first-time offenders, to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle at their own expense.

In 2008, there were over 9,000 accidents in the state involving alcohol and almost 400 fatalities in alcohol-related accidents. Executive Director of the New York State Sheriff’s Association, John F. Sullivan, stated, “Impaired driving continues to be a problem that negatively affects each and every one of us…Our deputies will be aggressively looking for all impaired drivers; make no mistake, if you are driving under the influence you will be arrested-no exceptions”.

Campaign officials hope that the campaign will help keep the roads safe and the Labor Day holiday enjoyable for all New Yorkers.

Yesterday morning, a fire broke out at the Long Island Railroad at the East Jamaica station around 11 AM. LIRR spokesperson Sal Arena reported that the fire was immediately contained and that there were no serious injuries.

Unfortunately, the fire did damage the main control switch that allows trains to switch tracks at the Jamaica station. Trains at 10 of the 11 LIRR stations were stopped as of 2:30 PM yesterday.

Thousands of passengers were stranded at the stations awaiting the news of repairs that would allow them to reach their destinations. Many parents expressed concerns that their children were stranded alone at the station due to the fire.

Auto club AAA recently released the results of a survey on dog owners and driving with their dogs. 60 percent of participants say that they have driven with their dog in the car and been distracted. Furthermore, only 17 percent of dog owners who have brought their dog in the car with them say they have used animal restraints.

AAA and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals warns drivers that driving with an unrestrained dog in the car can be as distracting and dangerous as texting and driving. The ASPCA says that drivers should always use animal restraints on dogs when they are riding in the car and that they should always be in the back seat.

Driving with an unrestrained dog in the front seat of the car can prove extremely distracting to the driver, especially if the dog tries to get in the driver’s lap and obstruct movement. The dog, driver, passengers, and other drivers on the road could all be in danger if the proper safety measures aren’t taken when driving with a dog in the car.

Beth Israel Medical Center, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Maimonides Medical Center, and Montefiore Medical Center will focus their medical malpractice reduction efforts on obstetrics. The fifth hospital, New York Presbyterian Hospital, is focusing on preventing surgical errors.

Earlier this month, a fire broke out at the apartment of a 71-year old man from Queens. Queens fire department officials answered a 911 call around 6:30 PM from the man who was coughing and choking from the smoke filling his apartment. Emergency officials arrived just minutes later and rescued the man. Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly and prevent it from spreading to other apartments.

The elderly man was then taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead soon after.

The apartment was a third floor apartment located on 77th Street, north of Grand Central Parkway and just minutes from La Guardia Airport. Investigators are looking into what caused this tragic fire, but have ruled out criminal activity.

Our utmost sympathies go out to the family and friends of the man lost in the apartment fire.
