NYPD officer admits to drunk driving

Posted on September 10th, 2010 No Comments

This week, 31-year old NYPD officer Andrew Kelly plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter vehicular manslaughter and admitted to driving while intoxicated in the pedestrian accident that killed a Brooklyn woman in 2009.

Officer Kelly was driving while intoxicated when he struck 32-year old Vionique Valnord-Kassime who was hailing a cab after a wedding reception in Brooklyn.  After the accident, Kelly refused to submit a blood test to determine whether he was intoxicated or not.  Seven hours after the accident, a subpoena was issued for a blood test which showed no signs of alcohol.  Investigators questioned whether or not the NYPD had tried to cover up the fact that Kelly was drunk.

Kelly will serve 90 days in prison, significantly less than the 7 year maximum for charges of second-degree manslaughter.

Dangers of driving with dogs

Posted on August 19th, 2010 No Comments

Auto club AAA recently released the results of a survey on dog owners and driving with their dogs.  60 percent of participants say that they have driven with their dog in the car and been distracted.  Furthermore, only 17 percent of dog owners who have brought their dog in the car with them say they have used animal restraints.

AAA and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals warns drivers that driving with an unrestrained dog in the car can be as distracting and dangerous as texting and driving.  The ASPCA says that drivers should always use animal restraints on dogs when they are riding in the car and that they should always be in the back seat.

Driving with an unrestrained dog in the front seat of the car can prove extremely distracting to the driver, especially if the dog tries to get in the driver’s lap and obstruct movement.  The dog, driver, passengers, and other drivers on the road could all be in danger if the proper safety measures aren’t taken when driving with a dog in the car.

LED message boards added to NYPD cars

Posted on July 20th, 2010 No Comments

The NYPD announced last week that they will be adding LED message boards to the tops of all NYPD vehicles.

The blue lighted signs display a moving stream of messages that are easily readable from a distance.  All marked NYPD police vehicles will have the signs attached to the top of the car just under the police lights.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly stated there will be around 50 standard messages built into the cars related to general accident and traffic information.  Furthermore, later on they hope to have the ability to change messages from a central command center and be able to include information like missing child descriptions.

10 vehicles have already received the message boards in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and highways in the Bronx.
